When diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, one of the first questions the newly labeled diabetic will ask themselves is, “What now?” Although there is no cure for the disease, there are ways to maintain it.
According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the best ways to control your diabetes is to monitor your blood sugar. Know how many times you need to check your glucose level each day. You also need to make sure that level stays within your target range. If you don’t know the number of times you need to test yourself or your target level number, contact a medical professional.
Another great way to keep your Type 2 diabetes in check is to eat healthy. The Mayo Clinic suggests eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains whenever possible. Do your best to stay away from sweets and other junk food. Type 2 diabetics should also keep a close eye on the number of carbohydrates they consume in their daily diet and instead make an effort to purchase low glycemic index foods, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The third and final way to keep healthy is simple, exercise. The Mayo Clinic suggests exercising for at least 30 minutes each day. These workouts can include going on a bike ride, a walk, or taking an aerobics class. Any physical activity will help. Keep in mind that exercise lowers blood sugar, so some diabetics may need to eat a snack before working out.
