Whistling Straits awaits 2015 PGA Championship

The major championship returns to Wisconsin August 10-16, 2015

Whistling Straits, One Year Away

KOHLER, Wis. - This week's PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky means major championship golf returns to Wisconsin in just one year.

"Definitely a milestone for our staff in that the workload picks up a notch."

Jason Mengel has been on site at Whistling Straits for over a year preparing for the 2015 PGA Championship.

"They way I look at it is if you are hosting the Super Bowl at your high school football field, you have the field of play and we have one of the best in the world here. But we don't have all the infrastructure that goes with that."

The Wanamaker Club, hospitality villages, and chalets will rise up along many holes.

"Essentially we are building a small city out there on the Straits course."

And within this small city, Whistling Straits is hoping to re-claim the PGA Championship ticket sales record that was set in 2004, a record that was just broken this year by Valhalla.

"As far as pre-registration efforts they are right with Valhalla where they were pacing at this point in time, so that's a great place to be."

With huge crowds in 2004 and 2010 and one of the top rated courses in the nation, Whistling Straits has brought major championship golf back to Wisconsin.

"It had been a while. I think we had the PGA Championship in Milwaukee at Blue Mound in the 1930's and the first major championship to come back was the 2004 PGA Championship. In a short amount of time Whistling Straits has really put Wisconsin back on the map."

And the big events will keep coming. Whistling Straits will host the 2020 Ryder Cup.

"So if you think what will be about a 15 year period to have three PGA Championships and the Ryder Cup here is pretty unprecedented."

Free ticket pre-registration ends this Sunday if you plan on attending the 2015 PGA Championship. You can register at www.PGAChampionship.com.
