Paralyzed power lifter wins bronze at world championships

For power lifter Gabriel Gigout, bench pressing isn't the hardest part of a competition. It's getting on the bench.

The Texas native has spina bifida, a condition caused when the spinal column doesn't completely close. Gigout is paralyzed from the waist down, and according to his website, recently underwent his 31st major surgery.

To improve his condition, Gigout began lifting in 2011.

He depends on a wheelchair to move around, but International Power Lifting Rules prevent anyone from providing him assistance to move from the wheelchair to the bench.

Gigout took third place individually at the World Power Lifting Championships in May.
