Onalaska co-op back for the banner

ONALASKA, Wis. - It's been quite a run for the Onalaska girls hockey co-op.

The Hilltoppers have four all-State performers, and won 48 games over the last two seasons.

The only thing left to do?

"Definitely that state championship," junior Theresa Knutson said.

"Just take home the trophy I guess. The first place trophy," senior Molyl Coughlin said. "I don't want to take second again this year."

Onalaska's only loss in Wisconsin over the last two seasons is to the team that beat them in last year's state championship game, the same team they play friday: D.C. Everest.

"That's just even more motivation. It's like they knocked us out last year so why not do that to them this year," Knutson said.

"They took our season away. I mean it was the last game no matter what. But it's revenge," Coughlin said.

"We know how it feels to lose and that's been our motivation: unfinished business," Head Coach Eric Bugenhagen said. "When we were standing there, watching them shake hands, I'd go to all the girls and I'd tell them to remember this when you're training this summer and remember how this feels."

Bugenhagen said he tried to schedule a game against D-C Everest this season, but they said no.

"Because they know what's going to happen," he said.

Onalaska faces D.C. Everest Friday at 12 p.m. at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, with the winner advancing to the state championship game.
