Onalaska boys fall in state title game 6-1

MADISON, Wis. (WKBT) - There is no simpler way of saying it than Onalaska ran into a buzz-saw in its championship matchup against Verona.

"They are the toughest team we faced," said Hilltoppers Head Coach Tim Ebner. "They were better than we were today. They had more speed, they had more jump and they are a good hockey team. A great hockey team."

Behind two goals from Phil Fromberger, Verona took a 4-0 lead and didn't look back, beating Onalaska 6-1. The Hilltoppers' lone goal was scored by senior Luke Tepp on a third period power play.

"They were a great team," Tepp said. "We thought they were going to be tough. I mean they beat Notre Dame yesterday who was ranked first in the state all year."

Verona's defense limited the Hilltoppers to only nine shots on goal.

"They blocked a ton of shots. Their defense was probably one of the best defensive corps I've seen my whole four years playing for this team," said senior captain John Gargaro.

Even though it's silver and not gold, this team set a new bar for the Onalaska hockey program.

"Now all the teams after us have to do this. This is what they have to do, this is the standard now - state tournament or nothing," Tepp said.
