Loggers sweep doubleheader behind Katz home runs

Katz sets franchise single-season home run record

ALEXANDRIA, MN - With their backs against the wall, the Loggers made up some valuable ground in the Northwoods League South Division second half standings Wednesday night.

La Crosse entered their doubleheader at Alexandria three-games out of first place with just six games to go. They are now 1.5 back with four games left.

After a 7-4 extra innings win in game one, the Loggers won 11-5 in game two to complete the sweep. Also first place Lakeshore lost 3-0 to Waterloo.

Michael Katz, a sophomore first baseman out of William & Mary, played a large role in both victories as well as making it into the team record book.

Katz hit a three-run home run in the opening contest to break a 4-4 tie in what proved to be the winning runs.

He followed up that performance with a two home run game in game two, leaving him with 17 now on the season. That breaks the Loggers single-season home run record of 16 held by David Schultz from the 2003 season.

La Crosse heads to St. Cloud for a two game series before heading back home to host Wisconsin to close out the regular season.
