SPARTA, Wis. - Just as it should, it came down to second-ranked Onalaska and fourth-ranked Holmen Sunday in Sparta.
Only one team could advance from the class-AA regional to State.
Holmen (3-1) would need to beat Onalaska (3-0) twice in the double-elimination tournament in order to do so.
Mission accomplished. Holmen won 7-3 and 5-0, and they're headed back to State to defend their title.
"It feels great to go back after last year," Holmen pitcher Brandon Knutson said. "Hopefully we bring another state title back to Holmen."
"It feels awesome," said Head Coach Matt Jessessky. "Being able to come in on Sunday and win two games in a row over a very, very tough Onalaska team, it's just an outstanding feeling."
This Holmen team is much younger than the one from last year, but they're confident they can repeat.
"Last year, I think we had a little more talent, but I think this year we want to go get it more," Knutson said.
In the class-A regional in Prairie du Chien, Mitch Stalsberg hit a three-run walk-off homer with a full count and two outs, as Viroqua beat Westby 10-9. Both teams, however, will advance to State because Viroqua automatically qualifies as the host school.
La Crescent also advanced to State Sunday, beating Rochester Lourdes 6-1. The Lancers play Friday in Bird Island.21215654
