Former Twins Manager Tom Kelly headlines Loggers Winter Banquet

Kelly is fan of Northwoods League

ONALASKA, Wis. (WKBT) - 24085002

If you're a baseball fan, there aren't too many people better people to learn from than Tom Kelly.

Kelly managed the Minnesota Twins from 1986-2001, winning two World Series titles, 1987 and 1991. He was the featured speaker at the La Crosse Loggers Winter Banquet, and is a big fan of the Northwoods League.

"It's just another avenue for [college players] to continue their baseball and take it from the college to the summer league back to the college, or hopefully get in the draft," Kelly said.

"I know the Northwoods League is starting to bypass some of the other college leagues around the country on people that do get drafted, so I know it's really moving forward and that's a good sign for all of us in the upper Midwest."

Loggers Manager Jason Nell was also back in town. The head baseball Coach at Iowa Lakes, he went 43-27 in his first year in La Crosse. He said his second off-season has been different than that of last year.

"Last year, I was a little nervous going into it. A lot of the questions were about replacing an unbelievable coach in Andy [McKay]," Nell said. "It's a whole new organization, it's like going out on your first date. Now, it's- been there before, going out on our second date, and hopefully it lasts a little bit longer."

La Crosse opens the season on Tuesday, May 27 vs. Wisconsin.
