Dettwiler, UW-L open fall practice

QB Cummings returns in critical year for Eagles coaching staff

Dettwiler, UW-L open fall practice

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - UW-La Crosse took the field for the first time this season, holding its first practice under the lights Sunday.

The Eagles, coming off a disappointing 3-7 season, begin year No. 4 under Head Coach Joel Dettwiler. He hopes to improve upon a 10-20 record in WIAC play.

"I don't think anybody can put pressure on me more than I can put on myself," he said.

"The goal is to play as good as a team as we can and then the destination will be wins. I think that's the thing we'll be looking at. So I'm not really looking at that. I don't think our kids are worried about that."

For the first time in his tenure, the Eagles return a true starting quarterback: Trent Cummings. He threw seven touchdowns to three interceptions in 2013, and the Eagles' three wins came when he started.

"It's the first time we've had a pretty clear path with that position and I think that provides a lot of stability for our team, especially for our offense, and I think guys are going to rally behind him and it's going to be a fun deal," said Dettwiler.

"I don't want to say it's settling, but it's fun as the head coach to have a guy like that in that position that can go out and make some plays for us."

The Eagles open the season September 6th at Dubuque.
