Aquinas, Onalaska ready for State

LA CROSSE, Wis. - Two Coulee Region teams are two wins away from a state title: Onalaska and Aquinas.

The Blugolds are making their first trip to State since 2011, when they won the title. Last year, they struggled without Bronson Koenig and Michael Conway, both of whom were injured.

"I mean this was our goal. This was my goal since last year when I knew I wasn't going to be playing last year so definitely wanted to get back to State and win it for my senior year," Koenig said.

It was a tough year last year. We had some injuries, so just to know all that went into it, fighting back, getting healthy, it means a lot this year," said Conway.

Onalaska won the State title last season. They advanced to State this year behind a 41-point performance by Matt Thomas, who has now scored 2,017 points in his high school career.

"I was aware, but during the game when it happened I didn't really think anything of it. I was just trying to win the game," Thomas said.

"He's pretty special," Onalaska Head Coach Craig Kowal said. "Every time they made a run at us, he seemed to answer."

The Hilltoppers face Pulaski on Friday at 1:35. Aquinas faces top-ranked Little Chute Friday at 9 a.m.

News 8 will have coverage leading up to the games, and complete coverage from Madison later in the week.
