After three years, the tough work has paid off for the couple of seniors on the West Salem cross country team.

"It is going to be pretty exciting," said senior Michael Sauter.

After finishing in seventh place at sectionals the past three years, West Salem broke through in a big way capturing the WIAA Division 2 sectional championship this past Saturday and earning them a spot at state.

"I am a little nervous cause there is going to be a lot of good teams there but I think we have a good chance of placing okay."

Prior to sectionals, West Salem claimed the Coulee Conference Championship. All that success leads up to this Saturday as they make the program's first state appearance since 2008.

"We have the power to do really good in races," said junior Cameron Robaczewski. "I think that if we stay close together and have the same race strategy we will do pretty well on Saturday."

"They are obviously really talented and very dedicated," said head coach LeRoy Krall." This is probably the most fun group of kids I have ever had. They are very bright and they are just fun to be around."
