WEST SALEM, Wis. (WKBT) -

Two weeks before West Salem begins its first practice ahead of its first season in the MVC, the Panthers could soon be in the process of naming a new head coach.

Wayne Sackett confirmed to News 8 that he is stepping down, pending school board approval. Sackett, who recently finished his degree in administration at Viterbo, would become an associate head principal at Holmen.

"It's been an emotional couple of days," said Sackett, who met with his team Wednesday morning.

Sackett was named Coach of the Year in 2007, when he led West Salem to the WIAA Div. 4 state title. His panthers also finished as state runners-up in 2002 and 2005.

His replacement has not been named, although a source said two longtime assistants could be in the running.

Sackett said he is excited to be able to focus on being an educator.
