As of last Monday, UW-La Crosse pitcher Joel Effertz had yet to receive a hard contract offer from the team that drafted him in the 28th round. Now, he's officially a Miami Marlin.
"I think the opportunity the La Crosse Loggers gave me really helped out," he said.
Effertz was pitching in the Loggers' bullpen after a college career that spanned four schools: Arizona, Virginia, Madison College and UW-La Crosse.
"I really just want to give a shout-out to the coaching staff at U-W-L," he said. "I was pretty excited and pumped up when I got that call on Wednesday."
Miami is the third team to draft Effertz, who said he flies from Minneapolis to Jupiter, Florida for Rookie League on Monday.
"It's definitely a dream come true."
