Even when his team trailed winless UW-River Falls 14-0 at halftime, UW-La Crosse Head Coach Joel Dettwiler kept calm.
"It's kind of the nova-cane thing where, give it time, it will work eventually," he said.
In the fourth quarter, Ben Hertrampf rushed for a touchdown to get the Eagles on the board. Then, Trent Cummings hit Chris Stackhouse for a 12-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14.
"Coming out in the second half, I think we decided that, hey, we knew it wasn't going to be easy. It's time to lock it in and make some plays," said Eagles quarterback Trent Cummings (15/27, 173 yards, 2 TD).
Both teams scored on their first possession in overtime. Then, in the second overtime, Matt Van Druten hit a 35 yard field goal, as the Eagles won their third straight game.
"We're lucky to have enough times, probably, and the kids rose to the occasion," Dettwiler said.
UW-L (3-5, 3-2 WIAC) moves into fourth place in the conference standings. The Eagles travel to UW-Platteville next Saturday.
