Skogen, Onalaska head into MVC Championship in striking distance
University of Wisconsin recruit Ben Skogen won medalist honors for the fourth time in five MVC meets this season, pacing Onalaska to a team score of 308 on a rainy day at Coulee Golf Bowl.
Onalaska finished 12-shots better than second-place Holmen. The Vikings still hold a two-point advantage over the Hilltoppers in the season standings, however both teams now control their own destiny heading into Monday's MVC Championship at La Crosse Country Club.
"We live another day," said Onalaska head coach Dick Kyes after Thursday's meet. "So now we have a chance if we can play well on Monday and if we're fortunate enough to win that thing we could get a share of the title."
Onalaska won the MVC title last season and shared the championship with Holmen in two of the past four years.
Skogen finished his round at even par 72, edging teammate Ian Earp who shot a 74. "Playing through the bad weather today was very key," said Skogen. "We know this course pretty well so playing smart today and avoiding big numbers really helped us."
