UW-L has a new women's soccer coach: Jason Murphy. He currently coaches at Marian University (Wis.) and is the school's athletics director.
Murphy replaces Sara Burton, who transitioned to an administrative role within the UW-L Athletics Department after 20 years on the sidelines.
"As a graduate of UW-L, I never imagined having the opportunity to come back and work at the university,” Murphy said in a press release.
Murphy earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from UW-Stevens Point in 2004 and master’s degree in exercise and sport science: sport administration from UW-L in 2007. He spent four seasons as head women’s soccer coach at Marian, compiling a 33-12-2 Northern Athletic Conference (NAC) record. He was the conference's Coach of the Year in 2011, when Marian advanced to its first conference championship game.
In addition, Murphy took over as Marian’s athletics director in 2011.
Prior to becoming Marian’s head coach, Murphy served as an assistant women’s soccer coach at the University of Chicago (Ill.) for two years and at UW-Stevens Point for two seasons.
He was the head varsity girls and boys soccer coach at La Crosse Central High School for two years (2005-06).
“My wife, Cindy, and I look forward to moving back to La Crosse and begin integrating UW-L soccer into this wonderful community,” Murphy said. “The challenge to work in an athletics department with the historical success of UW-L’s is very exciting. I am looking forward to working with the coaches, support staff, and student-athletes. I can't wait to get started.”
“We could not be more excited to welcome Jason to the UW-L athletics family,” said UW-L Athletics Director Josh Whitman. “Jason comes to us with a tremendous pedigree, having enjoyed success as the head coach at Marian and, prior to that, as an assistant coach with tradition-rich programs at the University of Chicago and UW-Stevens Point. Having spent much of his career in Wisconsin, Jason is familiar with the state and the WIAC, which will allow him to hit the recruiting trail running."
Along with serving as head soccer coach, Murphy will be an instructor in UW-L’s Department of Exercise and Sport Science. At Marian, Murphy served as an adjunct professor in the School of Education.
