APPLETON, Wis. -

The performance from the Viroqua Blackhawks was well worth the wait. The WIAA Division 2 state semifinal game delayed by about 12 hours saw extra innings and a new WIAA State record.

Dustin Stalsberg RBI double in the top of the ninth inning scored cousin Mitch Stalsberg for the go-ahead, winning run in Viroqua's 2-1 win over Ripon.

"It got emotional a little bit, it's just insane,” said Dustin after the game. “Just finally making it here and getting the opportunity to be up with Mitchell on third, it was awesome.”

The victory sends Viroqua (23-6) to the Division 2 state championship game versus Jefferson (27-3) later Thursday. That game is scheduled to start at 4:35 p.m.

Senior left-handed pitcher Mitch Stalsberg also put his name in the WIAA State records book. His 21 strikeouts is a new all-division single game best.

“I didn't know that so I guess it feels pretty good. It's awesome.”

The Winona State recruit pitched all nine innings, allowing five hits and three walks. The one run allowed was just the second earned run he gave up this season.

“I just went out there and tried to make sure I was there for my teammates, throwing strikes and they were making plays for me so I was throwing strikes. It was all good. We all played well.”

“We're real fortunate and if there's a better pitcher in this area, I got to see him,” said Viroqua head coach Pete Swanson.
