Warriors fall to Augustana in NCAA Tournament

5/11/14 - Softball - Augustana 9, Winona State 8

WINONA, Minn. (WKBT) - Jenny Nelson became the first player in Winona State softball history to hit 20 home runs in a season but the Warriors fell to Augustana 9-8 in the NCAA Regional Tournament Sunday in Winona.

"It's hard, it's really hard, because this has been your life for how long, but deep down, it was one heck of a ride so I can't be too upset," said Nelson, who finished the year with school records for both home runs (20) and RBI (74).

Nelson hit a solo home run in the fifth inning that, when followed by a RBI single by Jessica Kullmann, put the No. 10 Warriors up 8-1. Augustana battled back, however, scoring five in the sixth and three in the seventh to come away with the victory.

"It really is a family and I couldn't have done it without these coaches and I could honestly say that I would never want to play for anyone else or with anyone else and I am glad I came in and this is the team that I was with," sophomore Hanna Lythberg said.

The Warriors end their season with a 48-9 record, the second-most wins in a campaign in school history. The team made its eighth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament while also winning the fifth NSIC Tournament title in program history.
