Getzin brings NCAA I experience to Winona State

2006 and 2007 SEC Coach of the Year

Getzin Introduced As New WSU Volleyball Coach

WINONA, Minn. - Back in December Joe Getzin was told he would not be brought back for a 13th season at Mississippi.

"A lot of reflection, and why I coach."

The two-time SEC Coach of the Year who led Ole Miss to three NCAA Tournament appearances was quickly out of work.

After about a month of reflecting, Getzin decided he didn't want to take a year off before finding his next coaching job.

Enter Winona State, an NCAA Division II team out of the NSIC.

"I'm a teacher at heart," said Getzin during Wednesday's introductory news conference. "And one of the things I saw happening at the Division I level that I was involved with was that I was becoming more of a manager of a staff and not having as much hands on opportunities to work with the athletes as much as I would like."

Getzin takes over a Winona State volleyball program that has had a losing NSIC record in four of the past five seasons.

"There is no quick fix. Obviously we are who we are right now. It's going to take a lot of effort on the girls part, a lot of commitment to get them to buy into what it takes to be successful."

Getzin says it starts with defense if the Warriors are to be a contender in arguably the toughest NCAA II conference

"It's more of an effort thing than anything else. I would say I was always known for having a defensive team. One of those scrappy teams that you don't like to play because they never go away. It's more of an attitude than anything else.

"I think there are pieces to the puzzle in place. I think the girls are ready to work hard. Everyone has said there are good athletes here."
