Melrose Mindoro has its first division one athlete in at least 30 years.
Alex Hatlevig signed a national letter of intent to compete in track and field at UW-Milwaukee.
"When I first heard the news I was going to get a national letter of intent, that I was going to sign here, I didn't know that it was going to be this big. I thought I was going to sign the paper and send it in the mail," he said. "But I feel pretty proud to be the first D-I athlete at Mel-Min. It's exciting."
Hatlevig was a big part of the Mustangs' second place finish at last year's WIAA State Track and Field Meet, winning the 100 and 200 meter dash. Now, he's headed to a program that's won a combined 18 straight indoor and outdoor league titles.
"I'm from a small school going to a big city, one of those, little schools can do big things," he said.
Hatlevig said he will likely compete in the 100, 200, 400 and shotput in college. He will major in Kinesiology.
UPDATE: Alex McRae, who played four years of division one college hockey at Army (Atlantic Hockey Conference), is a Mindoro, Wis. native. He graduated from Melrose-Mindoro in 2008.
