LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Sometimes you can learn a lot from a loss. Such is the case for the UW-L men's basketball team.

Last Saturday night, the Eagles came close to upsetting the top ranked team in the country: UW-Stevens Point. La Crosse actually led at the half.

"The WIAC is a really tough conference and to hang with the number one team, nationally ranked, that tells us that we can play with anyone if we want to and if we're doing the right things," said junior forward Lucas Collom.

"It's a little bit like the Badgers and Iowa. They didn't play great the first half but the Badgers just kept doing what they do. Pretty soon they're ahead and win a basketball game. That's kind of what Stevens Point did to us," said head coach Ken Koelbl. "You're talking about the team that's ranked number one in the nation and hasn't lost yet. And we're not too far off from that."

At 3-1 (9-4 overall), the Eagles sit 3-rd in the WIAC. UW-L hosts Superior Wednesday at 7:30.
