Good evening....I'm Gregg Wavrunek alongside Kyle
It's the 25th year of the WIAA state track and field
meet being held right here in La Crosse.
Day one of this year's meet will be known for a two-plus
hour delay because of lightning.
That pushes back the start of the afternoon session
for Divisions two and three .
And so that means a busy afternoon for U-W-L men's
track and field coach Josh Buccholtz .
getting things back on track ...
He's the on-site coordinator.
And nice job by one of the biggest stories in our
The Melrose-Mindoro senior looking to repeat in the
100 and 200 meter dash.
And the U-W Milwaukee recruit gets a good start in
He qualifies first with a time of 11-point-03.
It's good, taking first, it's good but definitely
not the best time, I was hoping for better.
Looked up and was a little dissapointed, though it'd
I was trying to go for the state record, but not today.
He says he'll go for it tomorrow.
Hatlevig also the defending state champ in the 200....he
easily wins his heat tonight and will defend that
title as well.
D-3 boys 400 meter dash ...
Bangor's Caleb Miller qualifies for 8-th in the finals
with a time of 51.18.
Alex Grulkowski of Independence follows him with a
time of 51.2 .
good for 9th.
Great day one for Arcadia.
Bryce Koval finishes out the boys 400 meter dash with
a 49.37 time .
he will enter tomorrow as the 2 seed.
Getting first in my heat is always good and it has
helped me mentally to get ready for tomorrow.
Arcadia girls also impressive on the day.
Their 4 by 200 relay team finishes 2nd in their heat.
One of their legs looking to continue the success.
Freshman Abbey Zastrow finishes 1st in her heat in
the 400 meter dash with a 58.89 time...
That's good for 4th in the final.
I was very nervous coming into it, tired from the
four by two, but it turned out pretty good.
She'll be up against Wrightstown's Bonnie Draxler
Draxler going for her 4-th straight title in the event.
When it comes to numbers of people qualified .
Mauston is right up there.
??? How's this for a measurement of success??
Their coach Bill DeVoe tells us for the 1-st time
they took a bus to La Crosse as opposed to a minivan!
Mauston coming off five school records at sectionals.
A great showing in the division two 800 meter relay.
The team from Mauston taking 4-th in their heat .
coming in with a time of .05.
And check out their reaction .
as they learn they qualify for the finals.
Means a little more for one golden eagle.
Listen to her story ...
Two day before track started I got in a car accident.
Ended up with a concussion and twelve stitches, so
it put me out until April, I think April 15th was
my first track, so I missed like a month and a couple
weeks of track.
That's not easy to do, now you're moving on to the
It's pretty exciting, I worked a lot.
Harder than I felt like I had in the past, and I had
to, to get back to running like I was my sophomore
So it was like a little bump in the road, but we got
Luther looking to repeat as state champions in the
Division 3 girls 400 meter relay ...
The Knights take 3-rd in their heat .
our top local finisher is Cashton .
The two teams .
separated by just point 1-6 seconds!
It was awesome.
We've been racing against them through out the season
and haven't quite been able to pull out ahead of them,
but we had awesome exchanges and it was able to pay
So hopefully we're able to do it again tomorrow in
A couple more events for D3 .
Girls 100 meter dash .
Royall's Taylor Juresh is second in her heat with
a time of 12.87 seconds
Boys 110 Hurdles .
Whitehall's Trystan Powell takes 2nd in his heat.
He says he won a state championship as an alternate
for a relay.
he's out for his own medal tomorrow.
Also tomorrow .
G-E-T's Annalese Lamke is heavily favored in the girls
divsion two discus.
She enters today as the defending champion in the
Let's head out to the pits ...
Lamke's best throw of the day is 41 feet, 7 and a
half inches, good enough for fourth place.
Yea, my coach said to keep and feed the hunger for
tomorrow and just come out and throw strong tomorrow
We go inside for more field events...
The rain forces pole vault into Mitchell Hall...
Westby's Bryce Glstad finishes tied for fifth, clearing
13 feet, 6 inches.
We've reached the midway mark for our state coverage.
Division one area highlights when the Highlight Zone
Two Logan girls relays are advancing to championship
Saturday...including the two-time defending state
So far so good for the Lady Rangers.
Amazing considering they are such a young team.
But they've got a great first leg, both for her speed
Kammesha Thomas leads the Logan girls 4x100 and 4x200.
KAMMESHA It's kind of nerve wracking.
She leads it because she has to.
KAMMESHA Because the handoff, I go back with my left.
You are supposed to turn back to your left and switch
it to your right.
But since I only have my right, I just lead off.
Kammesha was born without the lower part of her left
But that hasn't slowed her down.
KAMMESHA I grew up with it so it's not hard doing
stuff with it.
ASHLEY It's a lot of big insperation for our team
and it just means a lot to have someone with that
She's overcome so many things like being bullied so
it just means a lot to our team to have someone overcome
those and then be able to run as fast as she does.
Here, I got this for you.
With her lead, Logan placed second in the 4x200 in
And fourth in the 2x100 in 48.69.
KAMMESHA It's awesome.
And Kammesha will lead Logan into the final Saturday
in the 4x200.
They are going for a three-peat.
Gotta get them
And the time posted by the four-by-100 today is a
new school record .
breaking the time they had at sectionals.
Thanks Kyle for that story.
Joining Logan in the four by 1 is Central ...
Qualifying means a lot for Red Raiders senior Katie
She tore her ACL two times over the past three years.
Today she anchored Central to the 5-th best qualifying
My sophomore year I tore my ACL playing basketball.
And right as I was about to come back after that I
tore it playing volleyball my junior year so I didn't
get to do any sports my sophomore and junior years.
So this year it has just
been great, got to play volleyball,
basketball and run track.
And it's great to finish at the state meet.
Her persistence and determination for sports and the
passion she has is amazing.
It's infectious for all of Central.
Let's continue in D-1 ...

Tore Washa qualifies 5th with a time of 25.54.....
You might remember our story on her this week.

a time of 14.71....
And Kohwey also qualifies in the 300 hurdles .

I just ran my best times here.
Some good competition and I'm very happy.
A great day for Holmen overall.
Boys 200 meter dash.
it's the Viking's Ross Kinderman the 8th best qualifying
time with a 22.35....
To the 110 meter intermediate hurdles.
more from Kinderman.
he'll be seeded fifth tomorrow with a time of 14.98
800 meter relay.
Holmen breaks a school record with a time of .24.
that's good for qualifying 9th...
And in the 400 meter relay .
Holmen breaks another school record.
they qualify 5th...
I'd lie if I said we weren't expecting it.
We came in very confident and we know we have great
teams in front of us, but that is just great rabbits
for us to chase.
And hopefully we'll break the record again tomorrow.
To the field....
Boys long jump, Onalaska's Brandon Dawson with a nice
He records a jump of 22 feet, 4-point-25 inches, placing
And placing fourth and joining Dawson on the medal
stand is Logan's Aric Elmore.
His top jump of 22 feet, 10-point-25 inches is good
for fourth place.
Track and field state isn't the only playoff action.

In comes Sawyer Hammes.
We're all tied at 2!
Very next at bat .
Westby's Alex Robson hits this just deep enough to
center to score a sac fly!
Norsemen with the go ahead run!
And that would be your final.
Westby wins 3 to 2 and move onto sectionals.
Well we know...we've been there before...we've been
