MINNEAPOLIS, Min. - Rushford-Peterson head coach Tom Vix says this has been his team's goal since day one.
"They wanted to be back. And they wanted to get to the final. They told me that right away at the start of this year."
The Trojans knock out the team that beat them in last year's state semifinal game with a 53-51 victory over Maranatha Christian Academy. With the win, Rushford-Peterson will play in the 2014 MSHSL Class A state championship.
12-24 shooting for the Trojans in the first half gave them a lead of 29-19 at halftime.
Rushford-Peterson led by as many as 14 points with 16:40 left in the second half. Maranatha rallied back to tie the score at 44-44 and 51-51. In both cases the Trojans responded with a huge basket.
Cole Kingsley basket and foul put the Trojans back up 47-44.
And Austin O'Hare had a big offensive rebound and put-back for what turned out to be the game-winning shot with 1:26 left.
Rushford-Peterson will face Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Saturday at noon in the state championship game.
