HOLMEN, Wis. (WKBT) - Holmen High School students are challenging their peers to stop using the "R-word," a derogatory term for people who are mentally disabled.
A group created a video why it's important not to use the word and set up a table for the students to pledge not to use it.
"I hope to accomplish that more people stop using the R-Word, because it's just not right," said High School Kelsea Bingham.
"I don't want to hear that word and it hurts if I hear it," said Holmen High School Ashley Phelps.
"Educate students and let them know that it's not okay and they're misusing the word and there are other words to use." Samantha Harter, Cross Categorical Special education teacher at Holmen High School.
They're encouraging people to use words like "silly" or "uncool" instead.
