Aquinas holds off Lodi in state championship game

4th WIAA boys basketball state championship for Blugolds

MADISON, Wis. - Aquinas claims their fourth WIAA boys basketball state championship in program history. The Blugolds beat Lodi 53-48 in the title game played at the Kohl Center.

The game had the makings of a blowout. Entering the fourth quarter with a 17-point lead, Aquinas' opening possession of the period took a minute off the clock and ended with a Michael Conway layup to extend their lead to 19.

But Lodi wouldn't go down without a fight. Picking up their defensive intensity and hitting a few big three-pointers, the Blue Devils cut their deficit to 3 points.

"We got a little hesitant and that got us into trouble," says Rick Schneider who captured his third championship as Aquinas head coach.

Bronson Koenig, who will play college basketball for Bo Ryan and the Wisconsin Badgers, tried to make sure the Lodi rally would come up short. "I was just telling my teammates to calm down."

Koenig led Aquinas with 16 points as well as having a team high 5 assists. He adds another state title to the one he won his sophomore season. "It means a lot to me winning two state championships at Aquinas. Just a really good feeling."

"I saw Bronson raise his level of play to an incredible level," says Schneider as he reflected back on the Blugolds late season run to the state title. "We thought all year long we had a team that could win a state championship."
