LA CROSSE, WI (WKBT) -

It was a roller-coaster season for UW-La Crosse senior quarterback Andy Sires.

A two-year starter, the Houston, Minn. native was benched after an 0-5 start in favor of sophomore Trent Cummings. But when Cummings got injured, Sires got the chance to start the final game of the season, and his final game in maroon.

"Andy Sires is a guy who went through a pretty tough year, but also maybe one of the most important years of his life," UW-L Head Coach Joel Dettwiler said.

The Eagles lost the game to Eau Claire, finishing the year 3-7. Still, Sires said he won't soon forget his time in front of the hometown fans.

"It's a special program," said Sires. "What Coach Dettwiler and his staff are able to do here, the sky is the limit. Maybe not a lot of people believe in that, but I believe it 100 percent."
