WEST SALEM, Wis. (WKBT) -

West Salem football players should prepare to face Mississippi Valley Conference teams next season.

After weighing its options, West Salem will play varsity football in the MVC, according to Panthers Activities Director LeRoy Krall.

The WIAA passed a proposal Oct. 23 to move the school to the MVC. West Salem administrators unsuccessfully fought against the move, pointing out differences in enrollment.

To avoid having to switch conferences, West Salem could have accepted a four-year WIAA football postseason ban. However, Krall said the WIAA told him the ban would have affected all sports, not just football. West Salem could have also become an independent. Both options were simply too drastic, Krall said.

The WIAA, however, does not mandate lower level games. Therefore, Krall said he is meeting with Coulee Conference Activities Directors this week about continuing to play junior varsity games in the Coulee.
