Pretty good chance tomorrow night's West Salem at
Onalaska game will be worth the price of admission.
Winner is the outright 2016 champion.
And these teams have had a history of some great ballgames.
Three of the past four meetings...
have been decided in overtime.
each team has alternated winning in this series.
And over that seven game stretch.
only one game was decided by more than six points.
Tomorrow night will be a contrast of styles.
West Salem wins with defense.
allowing an average of ten points per game.
Onalaska has one of the best passing offenses in the
putting up 43 points per game.
Honestly I knew from the start of the season that
our defense was going to be good.
But that Logan game when we started, first half we
held them for no scores and all of a sudden that carried
into the second half.
Obviously they are very talented and it's going to
be a fun matchup against a team with that talent and
But we have to know what we do is what we do and it's
going to work every week.
We've got to make sure we can get some pressure on
him because if you give him all day to throw I think
he's shown what he can do.
I think we've surprised ourselves with how we've done
on offense this year.
We thought we'd be good but I didn't think going into
Week 9 that we'd be averaging over 42 points per game.
West Salem is going to be one of the best defenses
we've seen so far.
And their best defense is their offense, they slow
the game down and take possessions away from you by
grinding out the ball.
West Salem in their third season playing football
in the M-V-C has yet to win a conference title.
their last Coulee title was 2011.
Onalaska last won the M-V-C championship in 2006.
Tomorrow night those teams will battle for the 2016
Both teams five-and-one in M-V-C play so far this
winner claims the outright championship.
You won't find much in common between how these teams
however they both share a hunger to win this year's
We've been working for this for a long time, ever
since I got here and before that.
This is what we've been working for, keeping working
every day, day in and day out and now it's finally
time for that.
I think it's a lot to do with all the kids coming
up and really wanting to play football they saw we
had the chance to do something really good and we
all just went with it.
They've been close.
I remember one freshman year, Cody Turriff blocked
Last year Sample's great catch.
They've all been close.
It's going to be a good game on Friday, we know that.
We respect them and hopefully they respect us.
Both teams are great teams.
We have a lot of seniors on both ends.
We've been playing against each other since we were
young, ever since we've been playing tackle football.
We've been back and forth all throughout the years.
Hear more from both teams tonight at ten as well as
tomorrow at six.
Neither Onalaska nor West Salem dominated the preseason
talk in the M-V-C.
but they'll play for the conference championship on
the final week of the regular season.
Dan Coughlin gives his thoughts on this week's Ground
Let's discuss more this big West Salem versus Onalaska
If this was Week 4, probably not a whole big deal
made about this contest.
But the schedule makers did an excellent job and it
comes down to this.
If you can get a ticket for this game and you like
high school football, I would go.
On paper this should be a great game.
And like we've said, Week 3 or Week 4 we talked about
these teams but as it played out these two teams are
going to play for the championship and they couldn't
be more different in style.
West Salem gives up an average of 9 points per game
and Onalaska scored on average of 43 points per game.
West Salem gives up 154 yards per game in total offense
and Onalaska averages 490 total yards per game.
So it's going to be a very interesting game.
With numbers like that, what do you feel is a possible
key that will tip the scale in this game?
Special teams could be an important thing.
If you make a mistake it could be an important thing.
My guess is that West Salem is going to want to come
in and play ball control offense and keep the ball
out of Onalaska's hands as much as possible.
Undoubtedly they're going to try to scheme on defense
to make sure these receivers have different looks
and that the quarterback has different looks.
And Onalaska will go in and try to score points, that's
what I would do.
Playoffs begin one week from this Friday, brackets
come out this Saturday.
Coach will join us next week to talk all about those.
