Onalaska, Wis -

Onalaska standout guard Matt Thomas on Thursday gave his verbal commitment to play for the Iowa State Cyclones.

Earlier in the week, Thomas narrowed down his college choices to Iowa State and Virginia. The scholarship offers reached double digits his junior season as he helped lead the Hilltoppers to a WIAA Division 2 State Championship, averaging over 21 points per game.

Other schools with scholarship offers to Thomas included Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Marquette.

Iowa State was in the mix early for the 1st Team All-State athlete, as the first major program to be recruiting him. It paid off as Thomas notified Cyclones head coach Fred Hoiberg Thursday afternoon that he will be heading to Ames, Iowa after his upcoming senior season at Onalaska.

Thomas is the first verbal commitment to Iowa State's class of 2013. The Cyclones qualified for the NCAA Tournament this past season, as an at-large selection out of the Big 12 and knocked out defending national champion Connecticut in the second round.
