HOLMEN, Wis. -

The defending MVC baseball champs return just three starters, but that includes a big one: future Vanderbilt Commodore Jeren Kendall.

Vanderbilt is the No. 2 team in the country, so even some of Kendall's teammates were pleasantly surprised when he committed there back in December.

"I was shocked," pitcher Greg Rooney said,. "I found out the night it happened and I couldn't believe it. Called him right away and congratulated him. I knew he was going somewhere. I didn't know it was going to be this big."

"He's got all the tools. He's gotta put things together, but he throws very well from the outfield, he runs very well, he's got great bat speed," said Holmen Head Coach Duane Vike. "Last Spring, you could see he was ready to burst out."

The Vikings hope Kendall bursts out again this Spring. If Holmen repeats as MVC champs, their starting centerfielder will be a big reason why.

"If he gets on base, he can run, he can steal bases, so he can make an impact in a lot of areas," Vike said.

"Honestly, I don't feel that much pressure. I mean I got a good team surrounding me so I feel pretty good," said Kendall. "We'll be good this season for sure, though."
