Senior first baseman Jay Fanta easily summed up the run UW-La Crosse had at the NCAA III Midwest Regional hosted by UW-Whitewater. "Sometimes in baseball it's either your day or it's not. We ran into a couple of good teams that played well and we had a couple of bounces that didn't go our way."

The Eagles entered the NCAA Tournament on a 10-game winning streak, also winners in 21 of their past 22 contests. But that win streak was quickly snapped in their tournament opener, losing to Aurora 2-1.

UW-L bounced back in an elimination game versus North Park to win 4-2 which set up a rematch against a UW-Whitewater team the Eagles beat in all 6 games they played against them this season, 4 times in the regular season and a pair of wins in the WIAC Tournament.

But the 7th time proved to be a charm for the Warhawks. UW-Whitewater jumped ahead quickly with a 2-run home run from Jared Fon in the first inning, and ended up leading 10-1 going into the final inning.

UW-La Crosse put up a furious rally. Down to their final out, the Eagles scored 6 runs and ended up putting the potential tying run at the plate. But with runners on 2nd and 3rd base, Whitewater relief pitcher Matthew Roberts got UW-L outfielder Trevor Burmeister to flyout to left to end the game.

The 34 wins is a single season record for UW-La Crosse. Fanta is named to the 2012 D3baseball.com All-Midwest Region Player of the Year while Eagles' head coach Chris Schwarz is named the D3baseball.com All-Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
