Central's Thornton, De Soto's Johnson among winners at Bi-State
An emotional speech by Holmen senior Ben Fiers set the tone for the finals of the 31st annual Bi-State Classic. Fiers, who has battled back from a near fatal car crash on Christmas Eve 2011, thanked the community for its support.
"With the Miracle Minute last year at Bi-State, it really made an effect on me and my parents," he said. "It kept us together through everything through my hospital stay, and I just really want to thank you guys for that."
At 106 lbs., PdC's Taylor Elliott defeated Viroqua's JJ McClelland for the title. At 113 lbs., Central junior Ben Thornton took a 4-2 lead on his way to his third Bi-State title.
"It feels great. It feels unbelievable right now. It hasn't quite hit me yet," Thornton said after his match. "I know there have been a lot of really good wrestlers that are three-timers so to put me up with that caliber is a great accomplishment."
At 145 lbs., New Lisbon's Cullen Pedersen got a pin in the second round to secure the title. At 160 lbs., Cashton's Dominic Flock got a big takedown in the third period to go up 4-1. The victory was a huge goal he set coming into the season.
"It feels great. My one goal, my whole high school career, was to be a Bi-State champion," Flock said.
At 220 lbs., Royall's Christian Moore defeated Tomah's Lucas Stromberg-Windau 9-1. Finally, at heavyweight, De Soto's Cole Johnson wins in a thriller. Tied in the final minute, Johnson got an escape to take the lead. He won 4-1, preserving his status as the top ranked heavyweight.
"Once I saw it was 1-1, I said I really gotta get out here," Johnson said. "This is big."
