It's a tradition that began with Caledonia's state run in 2007. Each Sunday prior to the state championship game, the varsity team writes on a piece of paper why they want to win a state title. All those papers then get attached to a helmet that sits on the sidelines with the players for that year's big game.
"It turned into something real emotional," says Caledonia head coach Brent Schroeder. "The things that get said and the reasons why they want to win a state championship brought tears to their eyes."
Caledonia will face Moose Lake/Willow River for the 2012 MSHSL Class 2A State Championship on Friday. Both teams enter the game unbeaten on the season. This is a rematch of the 2011 Prep Bowl final that Caledonia won 27-0.
The Warriors are going for their third straight state championship, and their fifth title over the past six years.
