Along with the opener Minnesota.
Week three of the News 8 Highlight Zone will also
feature the conference opener for many Wisconsin teams.
To talk more here is former Aquinas head coach Dan
One of the trends I'm taking away from the opening
two weeks are non-playoff teams from a year ago getting
off to hot starts.
Sparta, Luther, New Lisbon, Royall, and North Crawford
a combined 10-0 right now.
Last year they combined for a 9-34 record, so they've
already eclipsed their win total last year.
Let's take a look at Sparta.
They've changed their offense, they went to the spread.
Very effective they have a nice running attack plus
they can throw the football.
They're going to be a force in the MVC.
You mentioned spread.
Six of the eight MVC teams now running the spread
We hear that terminology all the time, but what makes
an offense a spread offense?
It's a modern adaptation.
Instead of having your eligible receivers close to
the ball you spread them out and hopefully you accomplish
one of two things.
One is to get one-on-one coverage with the defensive
backs and the receivers and/or to spread out the defense
so it opens up running lanes.
It can be very effective but it's an athlete driven
Put on your offensive coordinator cap, what's the
best way of stopping a spread offense?
You have three basic options.
You have to take a look at what they want to do and
you've got to stop that first.
If they are primarily a throwing team you can either
put defensive backs behind your cornerbacks to help
them out or if you want to gamble take your extra
guys and blitz them.
If they are spreading you out to run then you're going
to want to take your extra guys and move them into
the box from the offensive tackles on in and you want
to stop the run with that.
