The Winona State football team is mourning the loss
of one of their own.
Campus officials say defensive lineman Shawn Afryl
died last night while practicing.
News 8's Kyle Deckelbaum joins us live in the studio
with the details.
The Warriors held a voluntary conditioning session
at last night .
just with the strength staff.
Around 20 minutes into practice .
an assistant coach tells us Afryl collapsed.
Paramedics arrived on scene .
but could not recesitate him.
At this time .
we don't know the cause of death.
The Chicago Tribune though is reporting cardiac arrest.
Afryl transferred to Winona State from Illinois just
two months ago.
He played in the Big Ten for three seasons .
and graduated with a degree in political science.
In his short time at Winona .
coaches were impressed with his work ethic.
They had high hopes for him.
He was only 22.

an ER doctor on the ambulance.
So the reality is every resource that he had available
to try to save him, everything was in his favor.
It just didn't go that way.
Keller says the team is taking it tough.
They're holding a team meeting tonight.
Grief counselors have already met with all the players
that were on the field when it happened.
Afryl's family set up a fund to help pay for burial
and funeral expenses.
