What a start to the second half of the season for
the La Crosse Loggers last night....blanking Green
Bay seven-to-nothing behind 31-hundred fans at Copeland
The same teams at it again tonight.
During the team's batting practice this afternoon
I got an opportunity to catch up with Loggers manager
Jason Nell .... as his team hits the reset button
for the second half.
"I told the guys I appreciate their effort. They're
a very good bunch of guys on and off the field. I
said let's not worry about records right now, let's
just worry about playing good baseball. Because we
didn't end the first-half on a very good note, it
was a long day. It was a long week in Battle Creek
and in Madison. No excuses whatsoever. But it's good
for us, it toughens us up a little bit and that is
what we needed. Again hopefully with ten games left
we'll start talking about things and maybe we'll be
there again. I don't know, but I know we have a good
enough ballclub and it's up to me and my coaches to
help motivate these kids, get these kids better today.
We'll evaluate today and try to get better tomorrow.
Hopefully we'll be there at the end as well.
?This Northwoods League season can be Jekyl and Hyde.
We've seen teams in the past with really good first
halfs and then in the cellar in the second half and
vice versa. You've been able last year to sustain
a good first half to a good second half. What's going
to be the key to being able to do that again this
We've got a lot of good guys coming in, I think every
kid on this team right now understands their role
on the team and what they need to do to crack into
the lineup. Whether they are playing or not playing,
it's up to us as coaches to get these kids better.
Again I really like my guys. I like the effort both
on and off the field. They're good character kids.
We've got the speed to run the bases. We don't have
the ability to juice to hit the ball over the fence
but I'm not looking for that. I'm looking for us to
get on base, to get our on base perentage up so we
can use that speed and we can run. And to bang out
hits, what we did yesterday that's not going to happen
every night getting 15 hits or whatever it is. But
we have the ability to hit like that, we have the
ability to run the bases, we have a solid defense
and I really like my guys especially up the middle,
and the pitching. I think we got the pieces."
