LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

In just two weeks kids in the La Crosse School district will head back to class, but Tuesday some teachers are already heading back to school.

The new Northside Elementary opened for the first time Tuesday.

All week a few teachers each day will be moving into their classrooms and the new school is adding to their excitement for the school year to start.

"I would say every year is a new year and new students and things like that, but I think this year is more exciting because of the big hype and everything," first-grade teacher Kelli Laufenberg said.

"Today I'm kind of just trying to figure out in my mind where the big tables and chairs and things will be set up for kids," Laufenberg said.

Tuesday is Laufenberg's first time laying eyes inside the new Northside Elementary School and her new classroom, and at first glance she was overwhelmed.

"The colors just hit you and that's what's the coolest part is," she said.

"I think one of the big differences is we'll all have a Smartboard technology so they're the interactive white boards and that will make a big difference in the way I teach and the way that the students learn," Laufenberg said.

She says the Smartboard and that new classroom smell aren't the only benefits of this new space.

"I think the big part is that everyone is together."

Laufenberg says there is still a lot of work to be done, but when her first-graders walk in the door on the first day of school it will all be worth it.

"I hope they're just as excited as I am. I think that they'll love the new colors and and the new school and know that Northside cares about our kids and that this is for them," she said.

Next week begins staff development training before welcoming in the new students Sept. 2.

The La Crosse School District says everything will be completed inside and out before schools starts.

If you would like a chance to tour the new school, it will be open to the public Thursday, Sept. 18.
