LA CROSSE, Wis. -- A recent Holmen High School grad is using her life-long love of animals to help care for some of those in the most need.
Erika Padgett is a volunteer at the Coulee Region Humane Society and this month's Student Making a Difference. For the past year-and-a-half or so, Erika has been volunteering a couple of times a week at the humane society.
She spends a lot of her time socializing dogs, taking them outside and playing with them and even cleaning their kennels.
Erika says it's something that comes naturally. "I've always been an animal lover, ever since I was a baby I've been around dogs and cats. There's just something about them that I've always loved and I've always known that no matter what I do, I've always wanted to work with animals so that way volunteering I get to work with animals even though I can't have any dogs of my own right now."
Erika says she loves how friendly and helpful the staff is at the humane society. She encourages others to give their time too. "It's a great way to give back to the community, it helps animals in need and it makes you feel better too. I have so much fun when I'm here, I wouldn't trade it for anything," said Erika.
