LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

A seventh grade teacher at Longfellow Middle School was selected as a recipient of the 2014 Kohl Fellowship Award.

Jeanne Halderson was only one of three southwest Wisconsin teachers selected and one of only 20 middle school educators across the state, according to the School District of La Crosse.

The Kohl Fellowship program recognizes teaching excellence and innovation in the State of Wisconsin.

“Jeanne is one of those charismatic and caring teachers who has a passion for engaging students,” Longfellow Middle School Principal Dr. Penny Reedy said.

Halderson will be automatically entered as a nominee for the Wisconsin Teacher of the Year. In addition, Longfellow Middle School will receive a $1,000 grant.

“The best gift a teacher can receive doesn't happen in the year that you have a child, but in the years that follow,” Halderson said. “You know you have truly succeeded in teaching when you make an impact that lasts a lifetime.”

On Sunday, March 23, Halderson and the other award recipients will be honored at a luncheon in Eau Claire.
