LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Most of the La Crosse School District is still on summer vacation, but Thursday marked the first day of school at Hamilton Early Learning Center.

It's the start of the second year of Hamilton's year-round model. Principal Steve Michaels said it's been much easier to transition into this year.

“Our students are accustomed to having several breaks spread throughout the year," Michaels said. “And having a six-week break is one that bodes well for our students. In other places in our district, summer school started last week so many of their friends have already returned to school for the summer and we start today.”

Students on this schedule have 45 days on and 15 days off and a five-week summer break. Michaels said they’re already starting to see the results they’re looking for.

“We're really looking for two areas in terms of student achievement, and one is mitigating the summer slide and we have evidence of that from last year,” Michaels said. “We look to see that continuing it makes sense with our calendar that that would be an observable outcome for this model. So mitigating the summer slide number one, and number two is just increasing overall student achievement.”
