The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is touting new recommendations developed by emergency responders and education officials to help make schools safer.
The recommendations call for creating model policies, practices and procedures that can be adopted in both schools and local communities. They also call for creating local and statewide crisis response teams, school safety planning teams in each school, and specific training so school staff members know their roles in an emergency.
The recommendations DPI highlighted this week also call on schools to consider controlled access, visitor management and installing security technologies such as cameras and two-way radios.
Schools are already required to have a safety plan, which is reviewed every three years.
