Deadline approaching for Wisconsin parents wishing to send kids to voucher schools
Parents wishing to use a taxpayer funding voucher to send their children to a private school have until Friday to apply.
Forty-eight private and religious schools or school systems want to accept voucher students starting in the fall, but enrollment is capped at 500 students. If more than 500 apply, only the 25 with the most applicants will be allowed into the program.
State Department of Public Instruction spokesman Patrick Gaspar says details about how many people applied and whether the 500 limit has been exceeded won't be announced until sometime next week.
Gov. Scott Walker pushed for a voucher school expansion and the Republican-controlled Legislature approved it earlier this year. The program currently exists only in Milwaukee and the Racine area.
