LA CROSSE, Wis. -

Central High School held its 91st Memorial Day program Friday morning.

School leaders say the program is the longest running high school observance in the nation.

During the event, high school students, local veterans and members of the community gathered for a flag presentation and Central's Robed Choir.

"May we never forget the meaning of Memorial Day," said Major Jayson Stewart with the United States Army. Major Stewart was the keynote speaker at the observance.

"It shows character," Major Stewart said, speaking of the importance of Central High School's observance. "It shows a great support to the military. It's a fantastic thing to see. They were doing this during the 1970's when it wasn't fashionable to support the military or it was acceptable to shun US soldiers so it’s very impressive to see this."
