Assignment: Education - Project LIVE Update

Holmen, WIS. - Project LIVE, or Life-long Independence and Vocational Education, is a program in the Holmen School district which started last year for special education students between the ages of 18 and 21.

The purpose of the program is to help transition young adults with disabilities into life after high school.

As part of that program, students learned how to ride different forms of public transportation, but the students didn't have a way to travel together.

So, the friends and families of Project LIVE spent the past year fund raising.

With the help of the Holmen School District, the program director was able to purchase a bus.

"You can't be a life experience program by being limited with our location," said Nicholas Slusser, Project LIVE program director. "With this bus we have the freedoms... if something comes up on a whim we have the ability to go now. And that's extremely exciting for us because the world is full of opportunities, and now we're able to go and experience them."

The van cost $65,000. The family and friends of the program raised $54,000, and the district  paid the rest.
