Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's state budget proposal gives the UW System a chance to consider pay increases for its employees.
The plan doesn't include any money for salary increases, but it does allow regents to consider a supplemental pay plan. That means the UW System could raise tuition and use that money to pay its employees more.
UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow says their employees haven't had a raise in 5 years which makes it harder to keep them. "Our people, we've documented, are paid 18% less than their peers at similar institutions so there's a danger that at some point they're going to say I'm going to go work elsewhere and we would have to find the money to make the pay adjustment in our own budget," said Chancellor Gow.
The governor's plan still has to make it through the legislature before any tuition increases can happen.
