HOLMEN, Wis. -

Students at Sand Lake Elementary in Holmen are learning first-hand what it's like to eat locally grown foods as part of La Crosse County's Farm to School program.

On Thursday, the students fulfilled Gundersen Lutheran Chef Thomas Sacksteder’s challenge to grow a small crop of beans at home and later share their experience and a bean recipe with their classmates.

After learning about new health foods the kids get to incorporate them into their meals.

"It's just wonderful. Kids love it," said Chef Sacksteder. "They love to try the foods. They love to take the recipes home. And they love to share it with their families."

Two standout students were chosen to help with the next recipe, which involved cranberries. The Farm to School program is being implemented in La Crosse, Onalaska, West Salem and Holmen School Districts.
