Local elementary school students are turning nickles into homes for people in need.
It's part of the La Crescent-Hokah elementary school Nickles for Nicaragua fundraiser.
The school put collection jars in each classroom for students to drop money in with a goal of being able to build a home for a family in need. They raised more than $2,000.
Along with being able to help a family in Nicaragua, it was also a learning experience for the students.
"They're one of the poorest countries in the world, it would be nice to help them because, with their houses, we're building some so they can have a better life," said students Maya Colby and Alana Andersen.
The teachers hope the project will help the students learn the value of giving early in their lives.
