Evers declares April 'Month of the Military Child'
State Superintendent Tony Evers proclaimed April 2013 to be the "Month of the Military Child."
Evers hopes it will draw support for children who face challenges while their parents or family members serve our nation.
"It’s very common that community members don’t even know when a student’s parent is away on military service," Evers said. "The Month of the Child is a time to redouble our efforts to help them feel safe and succeed."
Evers encourages military families to tell their child’s teacher when stressful times are happening at home, like a parent will be deployed.
On April 15, students, parents and teachers are encouraged to wear purple as part of "Purple Up! For Military Kids." It’s a way of thanking and supporting children from military families, Evers said.
"Month of the Military Child" is being observed nationally.
