A local energy provider is warning to be on the lookout for scammers.

Xcel Energy has heard of illegal activity requesting payments for fake bills. It's been happening both over the phone and in person.

The company says the best thing to do is stay up to date with your account and what you owe.

And if someone comes knocking at your door, ask them to show an ID badge to prove they're legitimate. "If someone from Xcel Energy is talking to you personally at your residence, and if they can't produce that card, we recommend you ask them to leave until they can produce the proper identification," said Xcel Account Manager Rob Sturgis.

Sturgis also says the company will not ask for any personal identification over the phone.

If you have any questions or suspect suspicious activity, you can call Xcel at 1-800-895-4999.
