If you've ever considered giving ice fishing a try, this weekend is the time to do it.
Both Saturday and Sunday, you can fish anywhere in the state of Wisconsin for free. Both state residents and nonresidents don't need a fishing license. If you don't have gear and tackle, you can borrow some at 20 state parks around Wisconsin, including Perrot Park outside of La Crosse.
Twice a year, the Department of Natural Resources holds free fishing weekends, both in the summer and during the winter. Wardens say it gives people the chance to get outside and try something new.
"This is a good chance to take out maybe a neighbor or friend that has never been ice fishing before,” said conservation warden Dale Hochhausen. “It would be a good way to get them outdoors, and you never know, you might hook a person into fishing."
Minnesota is also offering free fishing this weekend through Monday – but it only applies to those fishers who are accompanying a child 16 years or younger.
